Cognitive Psychology Exam 2 Practice

The Stroop effect shows how an automatic reading process can interfere with a task that requires attention to color. When the ink color and the word’s meaning don’t match, the fast, habitual reading of the word pulls attention toward the word rather than the ink, slowing responses and causing errors. This demonstrates the clash between automatic processing (reading) and controlled processing (naming the ink color) and how selective attention has to resolve that conflict.

That’s why the best answer emphasizes interference caused by conflict between color words and ink color, driven by automatic reading and the need to selectively attend to the ink. The other ideas miss the core point: repetition priming isn’t what the Stroop task measures, reading isn’t performed without attention in this context and the task relies on attentional control to resolve competing information; and the effect isn’t about color perception and word meaning happening in the same brain region, but about how different processing streams interact and the control system mediates the interference.
